Our History
In 1976, the Baptist Convention of Kenya requested that the Kenya extension program establish and coordinate the curriculum and administration of Baptist Bible Schools in the various regions of Kenya.
In 1981, responding to the growth for trained leaders in Kenya. International Baptist Theological Seminary establishes Kenya Branch in Limuru. The Kenya Branch offered pastoral training in an extension format. During this time, the Kenya Branch was directed by the board of governors of IBTSEA, Arusha who granted the awards.
In 1984, the Kenyan Branch was approved as a center for the University of Nairobi “Certificate in Religious Studies.” This Certificate was considered by the Ministry of Education to be a Form 6 Level education.
In 1988 the Board of Governors of IBTSEA separated the Kenyan Branch from the Arusha Campus allowing both to continue to operate as separate institutions. This was to help each school develop at its own pace and to better respond to the unique environment of a specific country.
In 2011, Kenya Baptist Theological College was registered with
the Ministry of Education as a Diploma offering Institution.
Kenya Baptist Theological College has trained church leaders for
Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Southern Sudan, Rwanda, Burundi, and
Brazil. The students have come from different Christian
traditions and have served in different areas of leadership.
Over the years, KBTC has worked in partnership with Nairobi University, International Baptist Theological Seminary of East Africa, South African Theological Seminary, and Wayland Baptist University. We are currently seeking accreditation from Association for Christian Theological Education in Africa.
